Ambassador Lavie:
From The Chronicle of 23 Jun, 2000

Dominica has not taken enough advantage of training programmes available in Israel in such fields as agriculture, health, education, community development and tourism.

So said retiring Israeli Ambassador to the Caribbean Pinhas Lavie in an interview with The Chronicle during a farewell visit to Dominica this week.

Ambassador Lavie reported that Israel was willing to share its experiences as a developed country with Dominica as a friendly country. But, he believed Dominica had not taken enough advantage of the assistance Israel could provide.

He reported that Israel could send experts to run courses in Dominica.

He referred to a recent course in irrigation in St. Kitts-Nevis and pointed out that with Israel's expertise in the area of agricultural development, it could conduct training programmes here aimed at boosting the country's agriculture to support the tourist industry.

In addition, Israel could provide advisory services in many fields.

Ambassador Lavie sees as a need for Dominica, a plant to process many of its fruits which now go to waste and believes that Dominicans should place greater emphasis on agricultural diversification and marketing of their country as a nature isle.

Ambassador Lavie feels that benefits can accrue to the private sector from the mounting of a trade mission to Israel aimed at attracting joint ventures. He pointed out that in the quest for trade between Israel and Dominica transportation would not be a problem as container ships from Israel called at Jamaica daily.

The Israeli Ambassador said that Israel remained committed to achieving a genuine and lasting peace with its Arab neighbours, and was willing to sacrifice more lands for such peace.

He added, however, that in seeking peace Israel wanted to guarantee its security. He made it clear that in the pursuit of peace, and a homeland for the Palestinians, Israel would never give up or share its capital city Jerusalem.
