Flag furore

Opposition Leader Edison James believes that Dominicas democracy is under attack by the Chinese Ambassador Ye Dabo and called on Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to intervene before the situation worsens.

James, who was at the time addressing the formal launching of the Partys candidate for Dublanc, Cuthbert Joseph, claims that if he was PM Skerrit he would summon Dabo to a meeting at his office and ask him to withdraw the letter he wrote to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I would tell him that he was rude and out of place

James said if the request was declined he would ask the Chinese Government to withdraw Dabo as Ambassador.

James was referring to a letter by Dabo, expressing his concerns about the national flag of Taiwan, which was flying over a mans porch in Cork Street, opposite the UWPs office in Roseau.

According to the letter, the flags presence challenges the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, seriously hurting the feelings of the Chinese people and undermining the relationship between Dominica and China.

It is widely recognised by the international community that there is but one China in the world, that the Government of the Peoples Republic of China is the sole legal Government representing the whole of China and Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinas territory the letter states. Adding that the Taiwan authorities are neither a Sovereign state nor a nongovernmental organisation, it is an illegal local government.

The letter, which was also copied to PM Skerrit, further explained that the so-called national flag of the ROC is a symbol of separatism and the behaviour of displaying
